July, 2010 Trip Overview

On July 9, the group will assemble in Miami at the American Airlines gate for departure on the 11:20 p.m. flight #922 to La Paz, arriving at 5:35 am the next morning. Our long time friend, high school teacher and Quaker pastor Juan Balboa will meet us at the airport with his minibus and pack all our luggage while we walk slowly to a welcoming cup of coca tea and breathe deeply at the altitude of about 12,500 feet.

And we'll visit some nearby communities with QBL projects..

July 17, Juan takes us to La Paz, with a project visit en route. We will meet and worship with  Friends, meet Quaker Scholarship students, and visit projects in El Alto and nearby on the altiplano. We'll take a day trip to Tiwanaku, once home to more than 60,000 inhabitants - ancestors of our Aymara Friends. Its great civilization laid the foundation for much of the Inca empire. We'll have free time for exploring the market streets and museums of the capital city, and meet with knowledgeable people to gain some perspectives on Bolivia's social, economic, and political challenges --and the dramatic changes taking place under the first indigenous president in South America..

On July 21, Juan's minibus takes us to the world's highest navigable lake, and lunch (optional) at a hotel with museum and cultural center, where we may meet a famous reed boat builder. Then we ferry across the straits of Tiquina toward Copacabana.

We stay in Copacabana, on the shore of pristine Lake Titikaka, with ever-changing colors and breathtaking vistas backed by snowy mountain ranges. July 21, we boat to the Island of the Sun, legendary site of the creation of the first Inca couple by Wiracocha, and hike to an Inca site.
The next morning,
July 22, Peru travelers bus to Puno, a lively city at the northwestern end of Lake Titikaka.
The rest of the group returns with Juan to La Paz for early morning  departure to Miami
July 23.

Our shaman guide, Mallku, or one of his assistants will accompany those who opt for the Machu Picchu extension.
